Morning Psalm

Psalm 147:12-20

Harvesters gather ripe wheat and children play in the field beneath a peaceful walled town and an unguarded watchtower.

Oratio (prayer)

Lord, You send forth Your Word upon the earth. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 147 this morning, that I may praise You for Your Word and Your gifts in Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 147:12-20

12Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise thy God, O Zion.

13For he hath strengthened the bars of thy gates; he hath blessed thy children within thee.

14He maketh peace in thy borders, and filleth thee with the finest of the wheat.

15He sendeth forth his commandment upon earth: his word runneth very swiftly.

16He giveth snow like wool: he scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes.

17He casteth forth his ice like morsels: who can stand before his cold?

18He sendeth out his word, and melteth them: he causeth his wind to blow, and the waters flow.

19He sheweth his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments unto Israel.

20He hath not dealt so with any nation: and as for his judgments, they have not known them. Praise ye the LORD.

Consider this verse, for example:

“He sendeth out his word, and melteth them” (Psalm 147:18)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law "He giveth snow like wool: he scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes" (v. 16). Then the Psalm asks, "who can stand before his cold?" (v. 17). No one can stand before God in his own strength. Left to ourselves we would be like the nations of whom it says, "they have not known them" (v. 20).

The Gospel The same God who sends the frost "sendeth out his word, and melteth them" (v. 18). His Word in Christ melts hearts frozen in sin. "He sheweth his word unto Jacob" (v. 19), and He has shown it to you. "He maketh peace in thy borders, and filleth thee with the finest of the wheat" (v. 14). Jesus is your peace, and He feeds you with Himself, the Bread of life, in His Supper.

Prayer Lord, I confess that my heart is often cold toward You and Your Word. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Send out Your Word and melt me, give me Your peace, and fill me with good things. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

Cold seasons come, in weather and in life, when everything seems frozen and nothing grows. The Psalm says "his word runneth very swiftly" (v. 15). Under trial it may help to remember that God's Word is never slow to reach you, and to keep hearing it in church, in Scripture and in prayer until the thaw comes.

Prayer Lord, when my life feels frozen, send Your Word quickly to me. Melt my fears, give me Your peace, and feed me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
