Morning Psalm

Oratio (prayer)
O God, David prayed this Psalm when the Ziphims betrayed him to Saul. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 54 this morning, that I may call on Your name and find You my helper in Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Meditatio (meditation)
Psalm 54
To the chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, A Psalm of David, when the Ziphims came and said to Saul, Doth not David hide himself with us?
1Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me by thy strength.
2Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.
3For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them. Selah.
4Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.
5He shall reward evil unto mine enemies: cut them off in thy truth.
6I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O LORD; for it is good.
7For he hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.
Consider even rereading in another translation.

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.
Consider this verse, for example:
“I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O LORD; for it is good” (Psalm 54:6)
What other lines speak to you?
The Law David is surrounded: "strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them" (v. 3). The same can be said of us more often than we like. We do not always set God before us, and we try to defend ourselves by our own strength instead of His.
The Gospel David prays, "Save me, O God, by thy name" (v. 1), and God answers. "Behold, God is mine helper" (v. 4). The name David calls on was put on you in your Baptism, the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Jesus was betrayed and surrounded too, and He was delivered from death itself. In Him you can say with David, "he hath delivered me out of all trouble" (v. 7).
Prayer O God, I confess that I have not set You before me and have trusted my own strength. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Save me by Your name, and be my helper today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Tentatio (trial)
When others turn against us, or betray a trust, it can feel as if no one is on our side. Under trial it may help to pray David's words, "Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth" (v. 2), and to remember that "the Lord is with them that uphold my soul" (v. 4).
Prayer Lord, when I feel alone and opposed, uphold my soul. Deliver me from every trouble, and teach me to praise Your name, for it is good. In Jesus' name, Amen.
