Evening Psalm

Oratio (prayer)
Lord, You are round about Your people. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 125 this evening, that I may trust in You and rest in Your keeping through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Meditatio (meditation)
Psalm 125
A Song of degrees.
1They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.
2As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.
3For the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous; lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity.
4Do good, O LORD, unto those that be good, and to them that are upright in their hearts.
5As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the LORD shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity: but peace shall be upon Israel.
Consider even rereading in another translation.
You could also consider listening to this chapter, narrated:
KJV (Max McLean) · ESV (Max McLean) · NIV (dramatized)
You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.
Consider this verse, for example:
“Do good, O LORD, unto those that be good, and to them that are upright in their hearts” (Psalm 125:4)
What other lines speak to you?
The Law The Psalm warns of those "such as turn aside unto their crooked ways" (v. 5). It also knows the pull on the righteous to "put forth their hands unto iniquity" (v. 3). Looking back on the day, we can see where our own hands reached for what was not ours to take.
The Gospel "They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed" (v. 1). Your standing does not rest on your day. It rests on Christ, who was lifted up outside Jerusalem for you. "As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people" (v. 2), and tonight that includes you. His word for you this evening is "peace shall be upon Israel" (v. 5).
Prayer Lord, I confess the times today my hands reached toward wrong. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Keep me in Your peace, and be round about me this night. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Tentatio (trial)
When the wicked seem to prosper and the righteous seem pressed down, it is easy to lose heart. Under trial it may help to hear the promise that "the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous" (v. 3). God sets limits on what can touch His people.
Evening prayer Lord, as this day ends, surround me as the mountains surround Jerusalem. Guard my rest, and keep me steadfast in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture quotations are from the King James Version.
