Morning Psalm

Psalm 149

A joyful congregation sings on a hillside under streaming light as a young woman dances with a timbrel, an elder plays a harp, and a boy plays a lyre.

Oratio (prayer)

Lord God, You take pleasure in Your people. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 149 this morning, that I may sing You a new song and rejoice in Christ my King. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 149

1Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.

2Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.

3Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.

4For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.

5Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.

6Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand;

7To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;

8To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;

9To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.

You could also consider listening to this chapter, narrated:

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“Sing unto the LORD a new song” (Psalm 149:1)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law The Psalm speaks of the "judgment written" (v. 9) that God will carry out against the proud and the nations that oppose Him. None of us can stand in that judgment on our own. Left to ourselves, we would not be the meek, but among the proud.

The Gospel Yet "the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation" (v. 4). The salvation He gives is Jesus Christ, who clothes you with His righteousness. So we have reason to "Sing unto the LORD a new song" (v. 1). Through His Word, the "twoedged sword" (v. 6), He fights for us and wins. As the Psalm says, "let the children of Zion be joyful in their King" (v. 2).

Prayer Lord, I confess that my heart has often been proud and my praise has been cold. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Clothe me with Your salvation, and put a new song in my mouth. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

Sorrow can make joy feel out of reach. Under trial it may help to notice where the saints sing: "let them sing aloud upon their beds" (v. 5). Even in the place of rest, or of sickness, God's people may rejoice in Him.

Prayer Lord, when joy feels far away, remind me that You take pleasure in Your people. Let me sing to You even in the hard places. In Jesus' name, Amen.
