Morning Psalm

Psalm 62

A grey-bearded man in a rough mantle sits quietly on a high rock at sunrise, eyes lifted to the sky, with a rock fortress behind him and misty valleys below.

Oratio (prayer)

Lord God, You are my rock and my salvation. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 62 this morning, that my soul may wait on You alone through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 62

To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David.

1Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.

2He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.

3How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence.

4They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies: they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah.

5My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.

6He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.

7In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

8Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.

9Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.

10Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

11God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.

12Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man according to his work.

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.” (Psalm 62:5)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law The Psalm exposes where we really put our trust. "Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie" (v. 9). We lean on people, money and our own plans. The warning is plain: "if riches increase, set not your heart upon them" (v. 10). God renders "to every man according to his work" (v. 12), and our works cannot stand on their own.

The Gospel "Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation" (v. 1). Salvation is not something we build; it comes from Him. Jesus Christ is that rock, and He has done the work in your place. So the same verse that speaks of judgment begins, "Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy" (v. 12). For His sake, that mercy is yours.

Prayer Lord, I confess that I have trusted riches, people and my own strength more than You. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Be my rock this morning, and teach my soul to wait on You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

Some mornings the troubles feel like a "bowing wall" and "a tottering fence" (v. 3). Under trial it may help to do what the Psalm suggests: "pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us" (v. 8). You might name your worries to Him one by one, then rest in His promise.

Prayer Lord, I pour out my heart before You. Be my refuge today. When I am shaken, keep me from being moved, for You are my rock and my salvation. In Jesus' name, Amen.
