Evening Psalm

Psalm 8

A young shepherd in a wool cloak stands on a rocky ridge beside his resting sheep and a small fire, gazing up at a vast night sky full of stars, the Milky Way and a crescent moon.

Oratio (prayer)

O LORD our Lord, Your name is excellent in all the earth. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 8 this evening, that I may wonder at Your works and rest in Your care through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 8

To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of David.

1O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

2Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

3When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

4What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

5For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

6Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

7All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;

8The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

9O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“What is man, that thou art mindful of him?” (Psalm 8:4)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law When we look at the night sky, the Psalm asks, "What is man, that thou art mindful of him?" (v. 4). We are small, and we have misused the dominion He gave us "over the works of thy hands" (v. 6). We have sought our own glory instead of His name.

The Gospel Yet God is mindful of you. He visits us in His Son. Jesus was made "a little lower than the angels" (v. 5), became man, and suffered for us. Now He is crowned "with glory and honour" (v. 5), and the Father has "put all things under his feet" (v. 6). On Palm Sunday the children sang His praise, as the Psalm says, "Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength" (v. 2).

Prayer O Lord, I confess that I have sought my own glory and not Yours. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Thank You for being mindful of me and visiting me in Your Son. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

At night we can feel small and forgotten. Under trial it may help to look up, as the Psalmist did: "When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars" (v. 3). The God who made them is mindful of you, and He has crowned you with His mercy in Christ.

Evening prayer O LORD our Lord, as I lie down tonight, keep me in Your care. Let me rest in Your mindful love, and wake me to praise Your excellent name. In Jesus' name, Amen.
