Morning Psalm

Psalm 13

A young shepherd holding a small harp sits on a rock above a green valley, looking up as morning light breaks through dark clouds, his sheep grazing below.

Oratio (prayer)

Lord God, You hear the cry of those who wait for You. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 13 this morning, that I may trust in Your mercy through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 13

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

1How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?

2How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?

3Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;

4Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.

5But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.

6I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.” (Psalm 13:5)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law David asks, "how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?" (v. 1). Our sin is what separates us from God, and too often we bring Him only complaints. We "take counsel in my soul" (v. 2) and lean on ourselves instead of on His Word.

The Gospel The Psalm turns: "But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation" (v. 5). God's face did turn away once, from His Son on the cross, so that it may shine on you. In Christ the LORD "hath dealt bountifully with me" (v. 6). That is His word to you this morning.

Prayer Lord, I confess that I have trusted my own counsel and grown impatient with You. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Lighten my eyes, and teach me to rejoice in Your salvation. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

Long waiting can wear down faith. Under trial it may help to pray David's honest questions aloud, and then his next words: "Consider and hear me, O LORD my God" (v. 3). You do not need to hide your sorrow from Him. He hears.

Prayer Lord, when the days are long and the answer is slow, keep me trusting in Your mercy. Let me sing to You again, for You have dealt bountifully with me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
