Morning Psalm

Oratio (prayer)
O LORD, You are great and greatly to be praised. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 96 this morning, that I may sing a new song to You and tell of Your salvation, through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Meditatio (meditation)
Psalm 96
1O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.
2Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day.
3Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.
4For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.
5For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens.
6Honour and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength.
8Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts.
9O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.
10Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously.
11Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof.
12Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice
13Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.
Consider even rereading in another translation.
You could also consider listening to this chapter, narrated:
KJV (Max McLean) · ESV (Max McLean) · NIV (dramatized)
You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.
Consider this verse, for example:
“O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.” (Psalm 96:1)
What other lines speak to you?
The Law "For all the gods of the nations are idols" (v. 5). We are tempted to fear and love other things above Him: money, comfort, the good opinion of others. And the Psalm reminds us that the LORD "shall judge the world with righteousness" (v. 13).
The Gospel Yet the Psalm calls us to "shew forth his salvation from day to day" (v. 2). That salvation has a name. Jesus is the LORD who "cometh, for he cometh" (v. 13), first in humility to save, and again in glory. Because He bore our judgment, His coming is good news for you, and even "all the trees of the wood rejoice" (v. 12).
Prayer O LORD, I confess that I have feared and loved other things more than You. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Put a new song in my mouth, and let me declare Your glory today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Tentatio (trial)
It can be hard to sing when the day looks heavy. Under trial it may help to say the Psalm's confession aloud: "the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved" (v. 10). You might begin this day with that word, whatever the day brings.
Prayer Lord, when my heart is too heavy to sing, remind me that You reign. Steady me in Your promises, and let me tell of Your salvation today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
