Evening Psalm

Psalm 134

At night in the lamplit house of the LORD, servants in robes stand with lifted hands beside a golden lampstand, an arched window showing stars over Zion.

Oratio (prayer)

O LORD, maker of heaven and earth, Your servants bless You by night. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 134 this evening, that I may close the day with praise, through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 134

A Song of degrees.

1Behold, bless ye the LORD, all ye servants of the LORD, which by night stand in the house of the LORD.

2Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the LORD.

3The LORD that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion.

Consider even rereading in another translation.

You could also consider listening to this chapter, narrated:

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“Behold, bless ye the LORD, all ye servants of the LORD” (Psalm 134:1)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law The Psalm calls "all ye servants of the LORD" (v. 1) to bless Him. Too often our evenings fill with worry or distraction instead, and our hands reach for everything but Him.

The Gospel "The LORD that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion" (v. 3). The blessing comes from Him, not from us. In Jesus, God has come to us with His blessing, and it rests on you tonight. You are forgiven, and you may lie down in peace.

Prayer O LORD, I confess that I have let worry and distraction crowd out Your praise. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Bless me out of Zion, and let my last words today be thanks to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

Night can bring restless thoughts. Under trial it may help to do what the Psalm invites: "Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the LORD" (v. 2). You might end the day by naming His gifts to you, and leaving the rest in His hands.

Evening prayer Lord, watch over me this night. Let me rest in Your blessing, and wake me to serve You in the morning. In Jesus' name, Amen.
