Morning Psalm

Psalm 15

A worshipper walks a stone path up a hill toward the tabernacle and its altar smoke at dawn.

Oratio (prayer)

Lord, You dwell in Your holy hill. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 15 this morning, that I may see Your holiness and be brought into Your presence through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 15

A Psalm of David.

1LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?

2He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.

3He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.

4In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.

5He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

Consider even rereading in another translation.

You could also consider listening to this chapter, narrated:

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.” (Psalm 15:2)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law "LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?" (v. 1). The answer is one "that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart" (v. 2). We do not. We backbite, we keep our word only when it costs us nothing, and we do not always speak the truth even in our own hearts.

The Gospel Only one Man has walked uprightly in every step: Jesus Christ. He swore to His own hurt and changed not, going to the cross to keep His promise to save you. Now He brings you into God's tabernacle clothed in His righteousness. In Him you are welcome on the holy hill, and "He that doeth these things shall never be moved" (v. 5) is true of Christ, and so of you who are in Him.

Prayer Lord, I confess that I have not walked uprightly, and that my tongue has hurt my neighbour. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Thank You for bringing me into Your presence in Him. Today, guard my words and make me true. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

Keeping our word when it costs us can be a real trial. The Psalm honors the one who "sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not" (v. 4). Under trial it may help to look first to Christ, who kept His word to you at great cost, and then to ask Him for strength to keep yours today.

Prayer Lord Jesus, when keeping my word costs me, keep me faithful. Guard my tongue, and let me rest in Your faithfulness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
