Evening Psalm

Oratio (prayer)
Lord, as this evening comes, I enter Your gates with thanksgiving. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 100, that I may know You made me and keep me as Your own in Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Meditatio (meditation)
Psalm 100
A Psalm of praise.
1Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
2Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
3Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
5For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
Consider even rereading in another translation.
You could also consider listening to this chapter, narrated:
KJV (Max McLean) · ESV (Max McLean) · NIV (dramatized)
You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.
Consider this verse, for example:
“it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves” (Psalm 100:3)
What other lines speak to you?
The Law "Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves" (v. 3). Our pride wants to be self-made. By evening we may have spent the day serving ourselves rather than serving "the LORD with gladness" (v. 2).
The Gospel We are "his people, and the sheep of his pasture" (v. 3). Jesus is the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for the sheep, and He knows you by name. "For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting" (v. 5). His mercy did not run out today, and it will not run out tonight.
Prayer Lord, I confess that I have lived today as if I had made myself. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Keep me as a sheep of Your pasture, and give me a thankful heart tonight. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Tentatio (trial)
Thanksgiving can feel forced at the end of a hard day. The Psalm does not rest our thanks on how the day went. It rests on who God is: "his truth endureth to all generations" (v. 5). Under trial it may help to give thanks for that, even when there is little else you feel able to name.
Evening prayer Lord, as this day ends, I give You thanks for Your mercy that is everlasting. Shepherd me through the night, and keep me in Your pasture. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Scripture quotations are from the King James Version.
