Evening Psalm

Psalm 62

A man with short dark hair sits alone on a rocky outcrop overlooking misty mountains and water at sunset.

Oratio (prayer)

O God, my soul waits on You this evening. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 62, that I may rest in You alone, my rock and my salvation in Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 62

To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David.

1Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.

2He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.

3How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence.

4They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies: they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah.

5My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.

6He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.

7In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

8Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.

9Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.

10Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

11God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.

12Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man according to his work.

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him” (Psalm 62:5)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law David names what we lean on instead of God: "Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them" (v. 10). We set our hearts on riches, on people, on ourselves. Yet "men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie" (v. 9). And to God we must answer, for "thou renderest to every man according to his work" (v. 12).

The Gospel "Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy" (v. 12). The God who judges is the God who saves. "He only is my rock and my salvation" (v. 2), and that rock is Christ, who bore your sins so that His work is counted as yours. "Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation" (v. 1). You do not have to save yourself tonight. He already has.

Prayer O God, I confess that I have trusted in riches and in people more than in You. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Be my rock and my refuge, and let my soul wait on You alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

Evening can bring worries that crowd in once the day is quiet. The Psalm twice pauses with Selah, and invites, "pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us" (v. 8). Under trial it may help to do just that before sleep, naming each care to Him, and then to rest in the One who does not move.

Evening prayer Lord, as night comes, I pour out my heart before You. Be my refuge and my rock, and let me sleep in Your keeping. In Jesus' name, Amen.
