Morning Psalm

Psalm 150

People, birds, an elephant, a lion and a lamb lift their faces toward a bright sunburst under a golden sky.

Oratio (prayer)

Lord, all creation is made to praise You. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 150 this morning, that I may praise You for Your mighty acts in Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 150

1Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.

2Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.

3Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.

4Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.

5Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.

6Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

Consider even rereading in another translation.

You could also consider listening to this chapter, narrated:

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD” (Psalm 150:6)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law The Psalm calls, "Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD" (v. 6). Every breath we take is His gift, and yet we spend so many of them on complaint, on ourselves, or on nothing at all.

The Gospel "Praise him for his mighty acts" (v. 2). His mightiest act is the cross and the empty tomb, where Christ won forgiveness and life for you. Your praise does not earn His love. It answers it. This Sunday He gathers you with His people, in His "sanctuary" (v. 1), to hear His Word and receive His gifts, and then to praise Him.

Prayer Lord, I confess that I have used Your gift of breath for much besides Your praise. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Fill my mouth with thanks for Your mighty acts. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

Praise can feel far off on a hard day. The last Psalm does not ask us to feel strong. Under trial it may help to borrow its words and simply say them, "Praise ye the LORD" (v. 6), trusting that the Spirit can teach the heart to follow.

Prayer Lord, when praise is hard, give me breath and words to praise You anyway. In Jesus' name, Amen.
