Evening Psalm

Psalm 28

A man with black hair stands at dusk beside a bronze shield, hand on heart, face lifted in joyful song.

Oratio (prayer)

O LORD my rock, You hear the voice of those who cry to You. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 28 this evening, that I may lift my hands to You and trust Your saving strength in Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 28

A Psalm of David.

1Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.

2Hear the voice of my supplications, when I cry unto thee, when I lift up my hands toward thy holy oracle.

3Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, which speak peace to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts.

4Give them according to their deeds, and according to the wickedness of their endeavours: give them after the work of their hands; render to them their desert.

5Because they regard not the works of the LORD, nor the operation of his hands, he shall destroy them, and not build them up.

6Blessed be the LORD, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications.

7The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.

8The LORD is their strength, and he is the saving strength of his anointed.

9Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance: feed them also, and lift them up for ever.

What other lines speak to you?

The Law David prays, "Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, which speak peace to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts" (v. 3). We know how easily our words and our hearts part ways. Those who "regard not the works of the LORD" (v. 5) will not stand, and we have often been slow to regard them.

The Gospel "Blessed be the LORD, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications" (v. 6). God is not silent. He is "the saving strength of his anointed" (v. 8), and Jesus is His Anointed, raised from the grave for you. In Him you can pray the Psalm's last line as your own: "Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance: feed them also, and lift them up for ever" (v. 9).

Prayer Lord, I confess that my words and my heart have not always agreed. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Hear my supplications tonight, and be my strength and my shield. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

At night, when prayers seem to go unanswered, we may fear that God is silent. Under trial it may help to pray as David does, "be not silent to me" (v. 1), and then to say with him, "my heart trusted in him, and I am helped" (v. 7).

Evening prayer Lord, be my rock this night. Keep me and those I love, and lift us up in the morning. In Jesus' name, Amen.
