Evening Psalm

Psalm 99

A bald priest in white and blue leads worshipers ascending a holy hill toward a glowing temple sanctuary at twilight.

Oratio (prayer)

Lord our God, You reign and You are holy. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 99 this evening, that I may worship You with reverence and rest in Your forgiveness in Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 99

1The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved.

2The LORD is great in Zion; and he is high above all the people.

3Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy.

4The king’s strength also loveth judgment; thou dost establish equity, thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob.

5Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.

6Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them.

7He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them.

8Thou answeredst them, O LORD our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions.

9Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.

You could also consider listening to this chapter, narrated:

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy” (Psalm 99:5)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law "The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble" (v. 1). Again and again the Psalm says that He is holy, "for the LORD our God is holy" (v. 9). Before such holiness we have reason to tremble, for even of His faithful servants the Psalm says, "thou tookest vengeance of their inventions" (v. 8), and our own sins are many.

The Gospel Yet the Holy One answers those who call on Him. Moses, Aaron and Samuel "called upon the LORD, and he answered them" (v. 6). The Psalm says, "thou wast a God that forgavest them" (v. 8). The God who "sitteth between the cherubims" (v. 1) has come near in Jesus, our great High Priest. He forgives you, and you may call on Him tonight.

Prayer Holy Lord, I confess that I have not feared and honored You as I should. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Answer me when I call, and teach me to worship You with joy. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

When the world shakes and nothing seems steady, it can be hard to rest. Under trial it may help to end the day with the Psalm's words, "The LORD is great in Zion; and he is high above all the people" (v. 2), and to remember that He answers those who call upon His name.

Evening prayer Lord, You reign over all things. Watch over me through this night, and let me wake to praise Your holy name. In Jesus' name, Amen.
