Morning Psalm

Psalm 110

Melchizedek, the grey-bearded priest king of Salem in white robes and a gold circlet, offers bread and a golden cup at sunrise beside a smoking stone altar above his walled city.

Oratio (prayer)

Lord God, You have set Your Son at Your right hand. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 110 this morning, that I may trust Christ as my King and my Priest for ever. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 110

A Psalm of David.

1The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

2The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.

3Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.

4The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

5The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.

6He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries.

7He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.

You could also consider listening to this chapter, narrated:

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.” (Psalm 110:1)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law The Psalm speaks of enemies made a footstool and of "the day of his wrath" (v. 5). By nature we stand among those enemies, resisting His rule. "He shall judge among the heathen" (v. 6), and no one can stand there on his own merit.

The Gospel Jesus Himself taught that David spoke of Him here: "The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand" (v. 1). He is King, and He is also Priest: "Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek" (v. 4). He offered Himself once for all, and now He intercedes for you. By His work His people are made "willing in the day of thy power" (v. 3), clothed in the beauties of holiness, as all the saints are.

Prayer Lord, I confess that I have resisted Your rule and gone my own way. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Thank You that Christ is my Priest for ever, and reign in my heart today. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

When enemies seem strong, the Psalm points to Christ, who rules "in the midst of thine enemies" (v. 2). Under trial it may help to remember that He reigns now, even where we cannot see it. "He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head" (v. 7).

Prayer Lord Jesus, when I feel surrounded, remind me that You sit at the right hand of the Father. Lift up my head, and keep me in Your peace. In Jesus' name, Amen.
