Morning Psalm

Psalm 85

At sunrise on a misty green hillside two luminous allegorical figures embrace, suggesting mercy meeting truth and righteousness kissing peace.

Oratio (prayer)

O LORD, You have been favourable to Your land. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 85 this morning, that I may hear Your peace and trust Your mercy through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 85

To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah.

1LORD, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob.

2Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah.

3Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger.

4Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease.

5Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations?

6Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?

7Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation.

8I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly.

9Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land.

10Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

11Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven.

12Yea, the LORD shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase.

13Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps.

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.” (Psalm 85:10)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law The Psalm knows how quickly we turn: "but let them not turn again to folly" (v. 8). We need to be turned back: "Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease" (v. 4). Left to ourselves we drift from the mercy we have already received.

The Gospel Still the LORD has "forgiven the iniquity of thy people" and "covered all their sin" (v. 2). "Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other" (v. 10). That meeting is Jesus, in whom mercy and truth are one. "Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him" (v. 9), and that nearness is yours this morning in Christ.

Prayer O LORD, I confess that I have turned again to folly. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Speak peace to me, and set me in the way of His steps. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

When the day feels far from peace, it may help to pray the Psalm's own waiting: "I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people" (v. 8). You might begin this morning by asking Him to speak that peace again.

Prayer Lord, speak peace to me today. Keep me from folly, and let Your salvation be near. In Jesus' name, Amen.
