Morning Psalm

Psalm 148

A radiant creation morning with sun, mountains, sea, birds and trees bursting into being under a brilliant sky.

Oratio (prayer)

Lord God, You commanded and they were created. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 148 this morning, that I may praise Your name with all Your works, through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 148

1Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights.

2Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.

3Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light.

4Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.

5Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.

6He hath also stablished them for ever and ever: he hath made a decree which shall not pass.

7Praise the LORD from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps:

8Fire, and hail; snow, and vapour; stormy wind fulfilling his word:

9Mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and all cedars:

10Beasts, and all cattle; creeping things, and flying fowl:

11Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth:

12Both young men, and maidens; old men, and children:

13Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven.

14He also exalteth the horn of his people, the praise of all his saints; even of the children of Israel, a people near unto him. Praise ye the LORD.

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“he commanded, and they were created” (Psalm 148:5)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law All creation is called to praise, "Kings of the earth, and all people" (v. 11). We can stay silent while heavens and heights give Him glory. Withholding praise is its own refusal of the One whose "name alone is excellent" (v. 13).

The Gospel "Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created" (v. 5). That creating Word became flesh in Jesus. "He also exalteth the horn of his people, the praise of all his saints" (v. 14). In Christ He has drawn you near as His own, and given you a morning for praise.

Prayer Lord, I confess that I have been slow to praise You. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Open my mouth with Your creation, and let me exalt Your name today. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

A flat morning can make praise feel far away. Under trial it may help to remember that "he commanded, and they were created" (v. 5). You might ask Him to put that same Word to work in you, and join the praise already rising.

Prayer Lord, command praise in my heart today. Exalt Your name in me, and keep me near to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
