Morning Psalm

Psalm 61

A pilgrim prays below a towering sunlit rock above a remote valley.

Oratio (prayer)

O God, hear my cry. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 61 this morning, that You may lead me to the rock that is higher than I, through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 61

To the chief Musician upon Neginah, A Psalm of David.

1Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.

2From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

3For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.

4I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah.

5For thou, O God, hast heard my vows: thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name.

6Thou wilt prolong the king’s life: and his years as many generations.

7He shall abide before God for ever: O prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him.

8So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.

What other lines speak to you?

The Law The Psalm knows an overwhelmed heart: "From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed" (v. 2). We reach the end of our own strength. Left to ourselves we have no rock high enough.

The Gospel Still the cry is answered: "lead me to the rock that is higher than I" (v. 2). That Rock is Christ. "For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy" (v. 3). In Him you may abide "for ever" (v. 4), and His mercy and truth preserve you this morning.

Prayer O God, I confess that my heart is easily overwhelmed. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Lead me to the Rock higher than I, and be my shelter today. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

When the morning already feels like the end of the earth, it may help to pray the Psalm's own ask: "lead me to the rock that is higher than I" (v. 2). You might begin this day by asking Him to be that Rock again.

Prayer Lord, lead me to the Rock today. Hear my cry, and keep me under the covert of Your wings. In Jesus' name, Amen.
