Morning Psalm

Psalm 149

A humble community gathers in the morning light on a flowering hillside.

Oratio (prayer)

Lord, You take pleasure in Your people. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 149 this morning, that I may sing Your new song through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 149

1Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.

2Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.

3Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.

4For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.

5Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.

6Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand;

7To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;

8To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;

9To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.

You could also consider listening to this chapter, narrated:

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.” (Psalm 149:4)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law The saints are called to praise, "Sing unto the LORD a new song" (v. 1). We can stay silent while He is ready to beautify the meek. Withholding praise is its own refusal of the One who delights in His people.

The Gospel "For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation" (v. 4). That pleasure is yours in Christ. He has clothed the meek with His own salvation, and "the children of Zion" may "be joyful in their King" (v. 2). This morning He still takes pleasure in His own.

Prayer Lord, I confess that I have been slow to sing Your praise. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Take pleasure in me in Christ, and beautify me with Your salvation. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

A heavy morning can make a new song feel far away. Under trial it may help to remember that "the LORD taketh pleasure in his people" (v. 4). You might ask Him to put that pleasure to work in you, and join the praise of His saints.

Prayer Lord, put Your new song in my mouth today. Take pleasure in Your people, and keep me joyful in my King. In Jesus' name, Amen.
