Evening Psalm

Psalm 138

A potter carefully shapes a clay vessel in a warm evening workshop.

Oratio (prayer)

O LORD, I will praise You with my whole heart. Send Your Holy Spirit as I pray Psalm 138 this evening, that I may trust Your enduring mercy through Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Meditatio (meditation)

Psalm 138

A Psalm of David.

1I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.

2I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

3In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.

4All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O LORD, when they hear the words of thy mouth.

5Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the LORD: for great is the glory of the LORD.

6Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.

7Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.

8The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.

You might read the whole reading slowly, aloud, more than once.

Consider this verse, for example:

“The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever” (Psalm 138:8)

What other lines speak to you?

The Law David knows trouble even while he praises: "Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me" (v. 7). We end days still walking in the midst of trouble. Our own strength does not perfect what concerns us.

The Gospel Yet the promise stands: "The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands" (v. 8). In Jesus that mercy has a name and a cross. He will not forsake what His hands have made, and He perfects what concerns you tonight.

Prayer O LORD, I confess that I have trusted my own hands more than Yours. Forgive me for Jesus' sake. Perfect what concerns me, and let Your mercy endure over me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Tentatio (trial)

At day's end trouble can still crowd the heart. Under trial it may help to pray the Psalm's trust: "The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me" (v. 8). You might end the day resting in mercy that endures forever.

Evening prayer Lord, as night comes, perfect what concerns me. Forsake not the work of Your hands, and keep me in Your mercy. In Jesus' name, Amen.
